SHR began as AIDS Inc., a community response to the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s. Initially, AIDS Inc. provided social support to HIV positive individuals and their families, but soon, the organization assumed a leading role in providing medical care, emergency assistance and case management and other supportive services to HIV positive individuals across 23 counties of Northeast Texas. The original name was changed to Special Health Resources to reflect its broadened mission and services.
